David Dinnes Ogston was born in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, on 25 March 1945, and educated at Inverurie Academy and Aberdeen University, from where he graduated, MA 1966 and BD 1969. He worked for a short time with Dr Harry Whitley in St Giles Church, Edinburgh, before moving in 1973 to Balerno village church, Edinburgh, and in 1980 to St John's Kirk, Perth, where he is still incumbent.
